POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN ANIMAL STUDIES

The Department of Philosophy at Queen’s University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Animal Studies.  This is a one (1) year non-renewable fellowship which shall commence on July 1, 2015. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof. Will Kymlicka.  Applicants must have submitted their doctoral dissertation by that date, and must be within five years of having received their doctorate.

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated expertise in animal ethics, law and public policy, show evidence of teaching potential, and be able to participate constructively in departmental and collegial activities. While we interpret animal ethics, law and public policy broadly, and welcome applications from various disciplines that study human-animal relations including political science, law, philosophy, sociology and environmental studies, we are looking in particular for research that critically examines the moral, legal and political dimensions of how human-animal relations are governed.

The Postdoctoral Fellow appointed to this position is expected to reside in Kingston, to be actively involved in the day-to-day life of the Department, and to collaborate in developing initiatives related to the promotion of the analysis and understanding of animal rights (such as workshops, conferences, public lectures, etc.)

This Postdoctoral Fellowship carries a full-time equivalent salary of $40,000.   As part of this full-time salary, the incumbent will be appointed as a Term Adjunct to teach a 0.5 credit University course in animal ethics (or a cognate subject). The Term Adjunct appointment shall be governed by the Queen’s-QUFA collective agreement.

The University will provide support in its recruitment processes to applicants with disabilities, including accommodation that takes into account an applicant’s accessibility needs. If you require accommodation, please contact: Department of Philosophy, Marilyn Lavoie, at lavoiemm@queensu.ca, phone number 613-533-2182.

Queen’s University is committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace, and welcomes applications from women, visible minorities, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents will be given priority.

Each full application should include a curriculum-vitae, together with a statement of research interests, a teaching dossier, and a writing sample. Applicants should supply information concerning any interruptions in their academic careers and other factors that may have affected their capacity to complete scholarly work. Applications should be sent electronically to lavoiemm@queensu.ca , to arrive by January 15, 2015. It is the responsibility of the applicants to have three letters of reference sent directly by their referees to the same email address.
